Demolition of industry buildings on the roll call grounds, 2000

Parallel to the development of the historical research about Flossenbürg began a reevaluation of the former camp’s grounds. Thanks to a generous donation the core buildings of the former camp were included in the future plans of preservation and renovation, that included the roll call grounds and the laundry building, in which the prisoners’ bath was located. In 2004 the construction work started in the laundry and kitchen buildings, future to host the two permanent exhibitions, which were now also being planned.

The construction work and the planning of the exhibitions were intertwined from the beginning. The joint work of the construction team and exhibition team became a guideline, whose purpose was to find and preserve all infrastructures from the time of the concentration camp. The idea of rebuilding structures that had been destroyed was denied. The prisoners’ shower, being a particularly disgracing site, received a special treatment in the preservation work. Also, based on the archeological finds, and due to years of neglecting the memory of the victims, the exhibition founders saw great importance and dedicated a big part of their work to the presentation of former prisoners’ personal biographies.
