How to Talk about Past Wars in War Time - Experiences from Dnipro

29.11.2022, 19:00 Uhr

Valeriia Lavrenko will analyze how the Ukrainian state narrative regarding the history of the Second World War changed in 2014 and in 2022 and how these changes affected the expositions of Ukrainian museums. Using the example of the exhibition of diorama "Battle for the Dnipro" and the 7-th hall of Dmytro Yavornitskiy Dnipro National Historical Museum, we will discover one of the last re-expositions in Ukraine of museum spaces dedicated to the history of the Second World War. We will see how stories from the history of the Holocaust, the extermination of mentally ill persons and persons with disabilities, stories devoted to the survival strategies of ordinary residents of Dnipropetrovsk during the German occupation appeared in Ukrainian museum spaces during the period of independence.
