Hersbruck/Happurg

In summer of 1944, the second largest Flossenbürg subcamp was erected in the Middle Franconian city of Hersbruck, near the swimming pool. In neighboring Happurg, male inmates were forced to dig a tunnel system for the underground production of aircraft engines. By April 1945, approximately half of the prisoners were killed.

Hersbruck Subcamp

The Hersbruck Documentation Center is a walk-in trapezoidal structure, which is aligned with the Documentation Center in Happurg. The cube focuses on the individual fates of the prisoners of the Hersbruck subcamp. The names of over 9,000 prisoners are projected onto a media table. One part highlights biographies and historical information. A second projection contrasts the present landscape with the topography of the former Hersbruck subcamp complex.

The Happurg Documentation Center provides information about the forced labor and the historical location of the Hersbruck subcamp complex. In a display cabinet, a hammer drill is displayed, which was used for the construction of the tunnel. Audio stations with statements by former inmates illustrate the deadly element of the forced labor used for the construction site and in the tunnels.
